Power Cable Testing

Power Cable TestingIndustrial Tests, Inc. provides comprehensive Power Cable Testing services as part of our Electrical Testing and Maintenance services. We perform Power Cable Testing for industrial plants, large commercial facilities and municipal power stations. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are maintenance manager’s first choice for electrical testing, maintenance and repair.

About Power Cable Testing

The purpose for power cable testing is to ensure that power cable insulation is intact and operating efficiently.  Cables are tested for durability, reaction to high voltage, and detection of partial discharges.  ITI provides power cable testing for medium and high voltage AC cables that range upwards to 500 kilovolts.  Our tests are factory grade and are on par with manufacturer’s quality standards.  Approximately 99% of cable related failures occur as a result of improper installation during the commissioning of new electrical equipment.   ITI’s comprehensive testing program can ensure that potential problems are dealt with before further harm can be done.  Cables also require maintenance and restoration as they age.  ITI can pinpoint healthy cables from cables in need of repair.  From small lacerations, to punctures within the cable that leads to discharge of current, ITI provides preventative measures to ensure longevity for power cables.

Power Cable Testing Method

The testing method for power cables depend on the type of material that the cable is made from.  ITI identifies specific testing procedures for a wide variety of cables based on their make.  From Cross linked polyethylene cables to traditional copper cables.  We also try to specific testing procedures based on the overall thickness of the cable.

Three basic errors that occur in cable assemblies are open, shorts, and miss wires.  Low voltage tests can only detect shorts if they are touching each other.  In many instances, we have nicked, stray wires, braided shielding, or contaminants that can cause wires to be very close but not dead shorted.  High voltage tests can find near shorts that low voltage tests cannot because inducing a higher voltage to a cable increase the pressure in that cable.  The saying pressure bursts pipes apply in this instance because the higher voltage exposes nicks within the cable since an increase in voltage corresponds to more current passing through the cable.  As more current passes through, the likelihood of identifying leaks within the cable increases.
