Electrical Equipment Maintenance During Rainy Season
While the monsoon comes as a sigh of relief after the sweltering heat of the summers, it brings with it serious electrical hazards as well. What with the furious thunderstorms, incessant rain, and high-velocity winds, there is a pronounced escalation in the number of electricity-related accidents during the monsoons. Given the fact that water is a good conductor of electricity, you must essentially practice greater caution while maintaining or servicing your electrical equipment in the rainy season.
How to care for your electrical equipment during the rainy season?
- For starters, you might want to check for any malfunctions in your exterior electrical devices such as socket outlets, circuit breakers, switches, plugs, and fuses that might start acting up due to the seepage of rainwater inside. If you suspect any such electrical breakdown, you must immediately call up an expert professional to get your devices examined and replaced if necessary.
- During the monsoon season, the incessant rainfall may also end up damaging the motors of your electrical appliances such as dryers, washing machines, refrigerators, freezers, and furnaces. Once the water seeps inside the electrical parts, it might cause the equipment to overheat, catch fire or give you an electrical shock! As such, it is highly recommended that you make frequent checks on your equipment during the monsoon season to rule out any chances of water damage or safety compromise.
- Always install a doorbell with a waterproof cap protection in your house to ensure that it guarantees safe operation even when it is raining cats and dogs outside. However, if you have a traditional doorbell at your entrance, you must check for any cracks or damages and make sure that the wires are not worn out. If you notice any such damages to your doorbell, you must get it duly repaired by a professional electrician before anyone gets a shock while operating it. In addition to this, you might also want to get your doorbell sealed with silicone around the edges to further minimize the risk of an electrical shock.
- All your electronic equipment must be properly grounded to ensure greater protection from high power static currents. If done by a professional, grounding can be highly effective in not only reducing electrical noise but also enhancing the performance and safety of sensitive electronic equipment.
- Given the increased moisture levels in the environmental air during the monsoon season, your electrical appliances are also susceptible to fungal build up. As such, it is a good idea to clean your appliances with a dry cloth every now and then, to keep them up and running during the rainy season.
